Halo 3: ODST

With Modern Warfare 2 being released within 2 months, ODST will be released in around 23 days. Perhaps it’s a move on Microsoft’s part in trying to get into the game crazed world that will follow after 11/10/09. However, the game is going to be exclusive to the Xbox 360 for at least a year. As a result, users of other platforms will only be able to grumble with envy, until Modern Warfare 2 is released.

Halo 3: ODST is set just before the events of Halo 3. The Campaign follows a team of highly trained Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, which aren’t as powerful as the Master Chief, but are much more mobile, and have a squad they can depend upon. Unfortunately, during the Campaign, the objective of the player is to seek out his squad, in the ruins of New Mombassa, a world that the Covenant desperately wants. The game itself is set in an open world environment, and the missions are non-linear. It’s interesting to see how Bungie develops the game, but the most important component of any Halo game will always be the Multiplayer. There are many new achievements to fight for, many new medals to attain, and many more noobs to pwn.

There are a lot of changes in ODST, including a revamped HUD, which allows players to easily identify their enemies and allies. Instead of a motion sensor, players will have a compass, with a small icon at the bottom identifying where the next objective is. Secondly, the player will be able to see enemies and friendlies on their screen, with their character models being outlined in red for enemies, or blue for allies. Important mission related objects will be highlighted in yellow.

The Shield system that made Halo a revolutionary game is also being replaced, simply because ODST’s don’t have a shield. Instead, the health system is more like the Call of Duty system, with the players health regenerating after a short period of time, after taking cover.

Multiplayer features the all new Firefight mode, which involves Covenant Forces engaging the ODST’s in a small cluttered location. There can be 4 players that can take part in the match, and they are expected to fight the invading Covenant, and after successfully killing all of them, they progress to another round. It’s a simple concept, but it’s being toughened up with limited lives, and gameplay modifiers called skulls. These skulls can make a players life hell, with enemies throwing grenades like there’s no tomorrow, or having twice the amount of health.
