I use to buy a lot of domain names before but I always had hard time to find best or at least somewhat useful domain names. Here are few tips and resources where to buy domain names.
If you want to really buy cheap domain names with free privacy then 1and1.com is the best place if you ask me. While godaddy charges $9+$7 for privacy 1and1 gives you everything for $6.
Great places to buy already owned domain names with traffic, page rank and backlinks:
Sedo - sedo is great site and you can find very good domain names at cheap price, I use to buy bargain domain names under $300
Pool - Snap some deleted domain names! Pool allows for registered members to receive email every day on deleted domain names which might get deleted or land in auction. That all depends on what the domain name is!
Just Dropped - Sweet search tool for deleted domain names! Why would you buy brand new domain name when you can buy 5 year old domain with some page rank right?
Moniker - Great domain name auction website, its like ebay for domain names!
Snap Names - Another good auction website and also allows you to snap deleted domain names (good luck!)
Email example from Pool.com:

Choosing a web host is critical to internet success. I made the horrendous mistake of choosing a company because they had a 5 page ad in a popular computer magazine. In my opinion 1and1 is a horrible company with a horrible reputation which I found out too late. It should be a warning that when their phone is answered by a recording that tells you if you have gotten a notice from NCO, a collection agency, to press a certain number. If they are a reputable business, why do they have to send so many accounts to a collection agency?
Also Investigative journalist, Kelli Jack, has written 30 articles about this company and has a suit pending against them. Kelli alleges that 1and1 stole her domain name and sold it. Kelli states: “1and1 should be shut down.”
And finally, the Washington DC, Pennsylvania Better Business Bureau has them listed as “Unsatisfactory” Read comments on the BBB why. Read some customer comments on Red Flag.
I found a blog where they upload free daily just dropped lists. They do this by domain category. The blog is at http://www.dndizzy.com
