Is Google Ever Going To Come Out of Beta?

by Live Crunch on November 17, 2008

50% of Google products are still in Beta and even Gmail which is out since what? 2004? If I remember correctly! Is that some type of protection if something goes wrong they can say “Our bad, but you knew that the product is in Beta right?” Now days even business people are using many beta Google products yet for me beta means product is not totally finished and has bugs. Who knows maybe Google just forgot too update their logos right? But then again 50% of products? Thats just fishy!

Here are just few of their logos.

If you have users that number in the thousands and you have offered public signup for over one year, Beta designation is just an excuse. There is no viable reason why services in existence for many years and with user who rely on the service at this point, are still claiming to be in Beta. The term is almost becoming meaningless now, but users should be aware it does have meaning. If they are using a mission-critical app that is still in Beta, they should research the application and contact the company with questions before using the app to build businesses and processes. The only way to combat Beta madness is to start insisting companies come up with a concrete release plan and versions if applicable.
  • Beta just means if it doesn't get enough response, they can squash it and no one is allowed to be disappointed because it was just a beta. :)
