When I lived in Tokyo I remember the jump from 128K ISDN (circa. 1998) through the various ADSL speeds (4, 8, 12 mb) and finished in 2005 with a whopping 100Mb Fiber connection. Even then I thought it was a bit too much. 1Gb....? Well if you have it available why not use it.

I'm imagining that with speed like that it wouldn't take a week to upload my photos from a day's event to Flickr. And that I might actually be able to do other things on my internet connection while they uploaded! (Actually, with speeds like that they would upload so fast I wouldn't have time to need to do other things while they uploaded.)

Yeah, for just straight surfing of text-based websites those speeds in Japan sound pretty crazy. But for dealing with video or photo uploads or downloads...I would kill for those speeds for uploading my video and photos, and for downloading the video content that I watch!

What you're not getting is that with faster speeds the opportunity for new types of content and business models arises. Imagine Blu-Ray quality movies available for internet rental, for example. Imagine the content possible from sites like Hulu and various other legitimate television show providers online. Imagine that which you presently can not imagine being possible due to faster connections. If it's "piracy" you're worried about, then be advised that the complete elimination of internet access wouldn't stamp it out.

New technology is a waste because you can't figure out how to use it up? Right.
I guess sports cars are a waste...due to speed limits.
Computers are a waste too. If all you are doing is checking email, why not write a letter?
Silverware is a waste...who needs all that shiny metal when food can be picked up with fingers?
Might as well cut out the wasteful supermarkets and go hunt for food - since most people only buy such a small percentage of the entire stock in a super market at a time.

This is amazing. In India, we hardly get 512KBPS connection at home. :(
