More people now days are using cell phones as texting device then actual phone. And I can only imagine how the popularity of text messaging came. You are high school or college student in class, you are not allowed to talk because you are interrupting the whole class. But if you are texting some one nobody can hear it especially if you are sitting somewhere in the back. Internet over the past decade got popular too among young and old people , maybe usability of texting on your cell phone comes from that too who knows?.
Anyways I am still middle age guy that does not use any msg plan and even if somebody sends me text message I usually replay “Need me? Talk to me!” I think texting is evil , takes more time, your fingers get numb and you there are better chances that you have car accident then talking on the phone while driving.
Why do you text message?
my 2c.

if i could get rid of the voice plan on my cellphone i would. only 3 people actually call me the rest either IM, text or email me. it’s way less disruptive and easier to get information. i have to remember everything that was said in a phone call, the others i can refer back too.
Before living together my wife and I did a lot of texting, and still do quite a bit, but no where near as much as when first started going out. Now our kids do it more than we do , so we have an unlimited texting plan…which also saves minutes.
Back in my single days I use to HAVE to have the 1000 text message plan… before going out to hit up the clubs, bars, party whatever its quicker to just txt friends and tell them time and place.
Quick msgs is why txting beats actually calling, its the efficiency… also txting is ideal in a loud bar or club cause you don’t have to Yell so much.
Even now after being married 3 years I still txt a lot, but of course not the tremendous amount as before… its the speed, quick updates you just need to send a friend. Not using up your precious minutes…
So I guess to sum it all up: txting is cheaper, faster, clear to understand (vs talking in loud places)
I guess thats why twitter got so popular so fast to
@Lipton: I understand a bit of text msg here and there, but constantly text messaging I think it’s too much… My brother in law I did not see him ever talk on the phone, all he does is texting…wheres voice love?
The main reason I text is because it’s overall much easier to use and far more efficient than calling someone. When you call someone on their cell phone, you have to pray that you both have service. Assuming you both have service you have to pray that there isn’t much outside noise so you can hear the other person clearly. If they don’t answer you just wasted roughly 30 seconds to a minute waiting for the phone to ring and then the whole voicemail process. Who likes checking their voicemails anyway? I find it to be a cumbersome process.
With texting the person will always get the message clearly, there is no worry about service/etc because you know when the message has gone through. I can easily text 10 of my friends at once to find out what is going on, that’s easily 5-10 minutes saved assuming that the first 9 people don’t know. Texting is also private, unless you don’t want it to be. Talking on the phone is intrusive and annoying in public. I also don’t have to remember what I said with texting, it’s saved in my phone.
Texting is far more efficient, private, and less cumbersome to use than calling.
I use my phone for texting more than calling. It’s not because I’m scared of actually talking, it’s just that texting is far more convenient. I can read received messages from weeks ago for vital information. I can take my time in replying. I can reply in a crowded room. I have unlimited texts so I don’t have to eat up my minutes.
