While talking with some macrumors people guy submitted his ipod touch 2.0 upgrade link. I am downloading Ipod Touch 2.0 upgrade right now and lets hope nothing happens to my Ipod Touch

UPDATE: 9:38CST- I downloaded 20 apps from app store, installed it works like charm!! FYI u will lose music, videos etc. all you got to really do is re-sync it!

How do you install the file? I see several people say to hold the Shift key and click Update button but this does not work for me. Should it be hold Shift key and click the Restore button instead?
@LarryInAz: NO, hold the shift key and press at the same time on UPDATE button! it will ask you “where is the file” after that just install it.

On my mac keyboard I held the OPTION key and then pushed the Update button. It’s updating now…

For Macs, you hold Option instead of Shift.

I’m sorry for all of my mistakes in giving my apple customers heart attacks and heart aches. I will be stepping down since I am a dumbass effective after I figure this stupid apple server error thing. My bad.
I downloaded it, but it downloaded into a folder, and when I do option+click on update, it opens the window to select the file, but as I click on the file, it just opens to another folder with more folders inside. What did I do wrong?
PS: I’m on a mac.
I used shift restore and that worked fine.

Ok I downloaded this version. iTunes continues to give me a error occured message (-6) or (-4). I know the servers for the store is down. but what does this have to do with the already downloaded firmware? The update clunks out after the the restore and goes back into recovery mode where it bounces me back to 1.1.4. Inaddition when I try and sync my legal January update it says error occurs for that as well. I’m going to restart maybe that will shake some bugs lose.
Also I will upload the file to a higher bandwidth site to help with the increasing amount of downloads on the link above. Cause the download speeds just keep getting slower …

@Ted: It should automatically backup your ipod , at least my iTunes did. So even if you screw up you get back to where you ware. I can’t check on youtube at this moment give me 15-20 minutes when I get out of work ill find some wifi

Changed to DL from new host went from 40 kb/sec to 1.5 MB/sec – took about 2 minutes to DL now – thanks.

When I hold down Option and click on Update, it brings up a dialog to choose but doesn’t allow me to choose the ZIP file nor a folder!??
@chad you need to remove the “.zip” just leave it as “.ipsw”

Sweet, I’m using 2.0 now with all the app goodness thanks to this page. Youtube doesn’t work, but then I rarely use it. AppStore and iTunes mobile store seems to work despite all the itunes issues with upgrades.
I am having a problem. Not sure if I am doing the install incorrectly, or whether the file is the problem. I have attempted to update the software–only to get an unknown error has occurred (1403) message. Any suggestions?

what do you mean you compressed it?
When you downloaded it the name should have ended with “.ipsw.zip”
All you needed to do was del the “.zip”
Then perform the manual upgrade,option >> update. on Itunes
OMG! It’s Done. From Start to finish is has taken nearly 2.5 hours from start downloading to just now finishing updating.
Chad had the Open safe files option ticked in Safari which uncompressed the folder. I know cause mine did the same
when i finished downloading it, and i went to go look at it,
it was just a folder.
there was no place to change .zip or anything.
so i thought i need to compress it all, and it had a .zip on that and i changed it to .ipsw
Thanks! It took about 1 hour to download at a 30-50 kbps. I just upgraded it and it works great! It deletes all of your memory though (make sure you back it up). Oh well if YouTube doesn’t work. If you really want it, get it when Apple has everything fixed

@ALL: Youtube does work for me at least , I had no problems, all I had to do is have wifi and itunes open on PC (or mac) . After that for some reason it works.
I can’t view it If I shut down Itunes on my pc or mac WEIRD!… I think this is 2.0 bug…

I think it is due to safari automatically decompressing the ipsw.zip file thus maybe “corrupting” it.

@ ALL: okay, so i had just figured out what was causing the youtube to not function at all and for the life of me i just couldnt let it go…
so alright, i’m feeling like a genius and now i’m here to help you all DONT DOWNGRADE JUST PAY ATTENTION!!!
1. go to the home screen, tap the settings button
2. go to wi-fi and find your internet source/connection
3. then go back to settings and then tap general
4. scroll down until you find “location service” it should be under network
5. turn the “location service” off
then go to youtube and you SHOULD be able to play videos… i’m not positive if it’ll work for ALL, but it did for me and thats why i’m here trying to help you guys out so let me know if you works….

I have had it on mine for a couple of hours now and it seems good. A few minor glitches, but it may be with the 2.0
To put the iPod into recovery mode, hold down the Power On/Off button and the Home button at the same time until the screen goes blank.
Now let’s see…I’ve fully downloaded this file and to apply it to my iPod Touch I just go on iTunes and press update at the same time I press and hold the shift button…?

Ok guys i have redownloaded the file via Opera.
So the problem is with Safari,so heads up dont use safari or any browser that automatically unzips the files.
If you do,zipping it again dont work.

WAIT, not being rude, but just wait. I downloaded it, took about 20 minutes for the restore to do its thing. And not, I have the 2.0 firmware for free. Works Great. Thanks to all for your help!

Worked perfectly for me. I have a 8gb Touch that was jailbroken with iJailbreak. I didn’t restore or anything, just downloaded with a manager (iGetter), Option-Clicked on update and it did it’s thing. YouTube and Apps store work perfectly!

@live crunch – Yeah, it took about ten minutes (I guess I just didn’t consider that it is literally reinstalling the firmware). BTW thanks a lot for posting this link…it’s funny to see how many people on the web are complaining about Apple’s servers, while you made it incredibly easy. i got it to work, it is now loading up all my songs.
yeah so this iPod iTouch 2.0 software upgrade works and it was free, sweet.
I just did the update and everything works great. I didn’t have to do the You Tube trick either. It plays just fine with the location service on. I’m resyncining all my content now

hmmm to yasuo.. well it would just not have the green plus when I would go over the ipod and when I would let go so it could drag and drop.. it would not do it… syncing songs now.. I check all the itunes preferences on the iPod and it did not have certain sync set ups selected but… I selected sync all and it is doing so..

@ greg,there is no drag and drop function into the Ipod itself..for Ipod Touch that is,,thru itunes anyway.
You need to tick the songs you want either thru playlist or individual songs.
For Youtube,mine is working fine.
On macrumours it say you will need to “Activate” with Itunes.
Try to go to the itunes store and get any free application,that should authenticate you.

ok, problem with 2.0 seems to have been corrected when I downloaded the software again. Installed without difficulty, but only see one extra icon on ipod after upgrade—for the App Store. Any other icons on your pics I assume are Ipod Apps that were downloaded from the store. Am I correct?

I had to restore ine after I was retarded with tinkering… still works fine and did not even have to tinker with youtube this time. All good!

Hey, thanks Crunch! Everything I have tried, all the new apps work as advertised…only weird thing is that iTunes seems to ignore my request to sync only selected iPods. No big deal and I’m guessing its just a bug in 2.0. Anyone else see this?

So I am finally trying this after working today. I have a jailbroken 1.1.3 16GB iPod now so if I just install this, I will have a fully functional 2.0 iPod? I realize it won’t be jailbroken anymore but it has everything I’ve wanted anyhow.

I’m almost positive you’re supposed to hold down SHIFT and click update. But you’re supposed to select the file that you downloaded here. That was the whole point of this download. =]

1. download the file from the link
2. when the download is finished, DELETE the .zip off the end of the file so that it is just .ipsw
3. plug in your ipod touch and open itunes
4. click on your ipod and where the “update” button is, right click or on a mac hold down the option key at the same time as clicking update
5. locate the file you renamed .ipsw and click open
6. update will begin

For those that downloaded the file via safari ,redonload the file with another program.
IF your file was already unzipped automatically,it is corrupted.
Redownload with Opera or Firefox or any program that does not automatically unzip the ipsw file.

Hi, I downloaded the fiel to my mac and tried to upload my 32GB, holding the Option key and pressing the upload button as it says and when the window askes me where the file is, it does not recognices any of the files of the archive I dowloaded (it contains 2 .dmg files a Frimware folder and some other files) what can I do?

To change your settings, on the weather for example, you need to click on the little italic “i” that’s on the down right corner, then, click on the red circle with the white bar ad it will turn appear a delete button, if you wish to delete them then click it if not just don’t do this part. If you want to add another location then click at the “plus” sign on the left upper corner of the screen and find your location, then just click done, that’s it.

the mirror one thing isnt working, so i downloaded mirror two. it wont work at all. i uploaded it, and then an error popped up, and i had to restore my ipod. i tried it a second time, and once again, it didnt work. does mirror 1 and mirror 2 classify as the same file, or a connected file split into two parts? because you have to reup mirror one since it totally combusted.
so do i hold shift key and up date ? or shift key and restore ? and dose it matter witch Mirror you download it of ? thanks ?

So it looks like it’s updated with the mirror 2 link I used. When my iPod restarted it asked if I wanted to start as a new ipod or restore from a backup iTunes made last night. Chose backup, hope it works.

For anyone that is confused about the .rar file extension, go to http://rarlabs.com and download winrar. once u download it, double click the .rar file and u will see the .ipsw file inside of it. the .rar file is like a taped up folder, and u use the program to untape it (unrar it). when u see the file, drag and drop it to ur desktop or somewhere. and now, u have ur file. just go update in itunes.
i’m about to download it again… i think it may not have finished downloading so the whole file wasn’t there… when i said it sped up i think it just skipped the rest of it:( oh well

if u have a jailbreak=Restore to the original one (itunes retore, to get rid of jailbreak)
Then upgrade to 2.0.0, and THEN jailbreak (Using QuickPwn)

jwalk, this will not work anymore!!! im pretty sure apple has caught up with the leak and anyone who has an unregistered copy will freeze their ipod and not have it recognized by itunes. the ONLY way i have found to fix this error(unknown error 6 i think) is to restore it on a computer different from the one you used earlier. anyways, thats what worked for me…..

After you have downloaded the ipsw. file, plug in your ipodTouch, hold shift key first and press ‘update’, then you locate your ipsw file and there you go.

Tried upgrading my 8GB iPod Touch with FW1.1.4, I keep getting error 5. Tried at least 5 different computers (all windows), some with iTune 7.7, 7.8 and 8.0 all error 5. Yea, it worked fine even for me to upgrade from an iPod Touch of version 1.1.11 (forgot the version, oldest i guess).
It goes to 2.0 after I download the “shift+restore” button on the file.
Took about 5-10 minutes of upgrading and WHOA, a nice 2.0 platform in front of my eyes. The bummer was that it erased everything on my iPod touch, but a quick “re-sync” does the job from your iTune.
Now I am going to upgrade to 2.2 and download some cool apps.

hey,i downloaded 2.2 firmware and i installed it,but during the extraction one error message is coming,so what should i suppose to do?should i have to upgrade it to 2.0 before i upgrade it to 2.2??

I have version 1.1.4 with my ipod.. and just downgraded to itunes 7.7 (was at itunes 8).
I run the file and shift-click restore, all I get is “Error (5)”
Any help would be great!!
I downloaded the software with no problem, but i’m having a problem uploading the software to my ipod touch (whihch currently has software 1.1.5). I hold shift, then click on “check for update” and it prompts me to choose the file to use. I then click on the file I downloaded, but when my ipod touch is being updated, there is an “unknown error (5).” Any help would be great. Thanks.

Mine before is version 1.1.5, but when I tried too to install and upgrade to 2.2 version, it also gives an alert error (5) and suddenly after my 2nd attempt to restore it to the original through iTunes, it gives another error code which is (7), then my iPod Touch comes to white screen, as if you can’t use it anymore. I think, some of the units of iPod Touch having the version 1.1.5 has a problem. I already reported it to Mac Apple Service Center, and until now, there fixing on it or either they will give me a replacement for it. I hope they will replace for it.
@JM: I don’t think you installed correct version, have you read the whole text? Over 6000 people a day download that upgrade
I’m havin a problem with this. i think everything’s fine except for the mirrors, ’cause it doesn’t download properly. Safari automatically unzips the file, but then firefox suddenly “finishes” downloading after only 4-5 MB. now i’m downloading some torrents simultaneously, but i don’t think it has anythin to do with it. nonetheless, i also tried stopping other downloads and downloaded again, but the same problem occured. I’ve tried downloading from every mirror provided, but the same problem occurs. is it possible for ya to provide another, fresh mirror or something? thank you!
i’m sure it isn’t my internet connection that’s the problem, since all other previous downloads worked flawlessly. it’s just this one file that’s a pain in the ass. hope you can help.

Had 1.1.5 and downloaded this to take it to 2.0 was easy… only had to wait on the download that took about 20 min. held in shift to click update and picked the downloaded file and viola!!!! Then got the free upgrade to 2.2 from itunes Thanks!!!!

I have been working on this for hours now. I have downloaded the update 2.0 atleast 5 times and every time i hold shift and open the file it automaticly pulls up error (1403). My Ipod Touch is version 1.1.5 please help me

i know its a hassle, but DOWNGRADE to iTunes 7.7… i tried it with 8 and it did not work at all. Then I downgraded to 7.7 and it worked perfectly the first time. (:

make sure youre using itunes 7.7. download the file to your desktop, it’ll take a while. open up itunes, and when your ipod pops up, find the screen that has update on it. shift+click update, and select the file off the desktop. wait patiently, and there you go. lol
i tried with jailbreak, my ipod software is broken.
now, i restored the software to 1.1.5 version, is this upgrade from 1.1.5 to 2.0
will damage my software again?i’m afraid to loose my code warranty in apple store.

Hey, i just finished downloading the firmware, i have the latest verison of itunes, i made sure i did everything right. i have a mac so i held down alt and clicked on update and selected the file. it worked fine until it reached undating software and an eror occured, it said” an unknown eror has occured. can not update ipod” i restored it to factory settings and tried again, made no progress.

and why are there 2.dmg files? am i supposed to merge them? i converted them to ispw files they are the itunes icon but it says eror again and cannot be opened by updated.
